Reading this I'm thinking you decided not to go with the small frame/large mattress idea. Good! I don't like it either. :D
Chicklet has a 3/4 mattress which we bought for an old bed. But we have a HUGE superstore nearby that sells them in various softnesses. (Chicklet picked the nicest and cushiest one - she is my daughter.) When you run into trouble is with a bed that needs a 3/4 mattress in extra long size. Those are completely impossible to find! It was easier to replace the side of the bed than to find one of those. Especially one which is actually comfortable.
