The writers are definitely correct when they say the deductions which you don't have to actually explain are the best. The reason why Sherlock might need (or just want) to steal a child's birthday party are best left to the imagination I think.
I did predict you would object to the strings. I just really enjoyed the rich images I could conjure by completely ignoring the reality. :-)
