These are not recently-written stories, but they have lingered in my memory :) Hope you enjoy some of them. They're all gen.
First, I second the above recommendation of Westron Wynde's stories (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1507793/Westron-Wynde), they are all great fun.
Aragonite is a wonderful ACD writer, and very prolific. You might try An Ordinary Meeting (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4188511/1/An-Ordinary-Meeting) to start with, and if you like it she has many longer and more elaborate novellas to explore. The summary is: Lestrade meets the man mad enough to room with Sherlock Holmes.
This one is a lovely piece of art that tells the story of Holmes's hiatus in a sequence of beautifully rendered telegrams between him and Mycroft. Sub Rosa, A Correspondence by Wire (http://prof-pangaea.livejournal.com/115264.html) by prof-pangaea.
Pompey writes wonderfully detailed historical fiction. You might enjoy On Afghanistan's Plains (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4029558/1/On-Afghanistan-s-Plains), a prequel to the Holmes stories that follows Watson through his army experiences in Afghanistan and beyond.
KCS is another incredibly prolific ACD author. You might try out her Agreement and Disputation (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5042004/1/Agreement-and-Disputation), one of her lighter stories, to see if you enjoy her style. "Perhaps the most delightful friendships are those in which there is much agreement, much disputation, and yet more personal liking." -George Eliot. A budding friendship, seen through the private diary of Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
