I also love the idea of Sherlock and Mycroft basically doing the family version of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' and standing together against the awfulness that is their Mum and Dad.
I find sly baddies quite horrible and...not fun, really, but I can always enjoy loathing someone who uses sugar coated words and pretending to be polite while cutting people to ribbons. I detest that kind of passive aggressive bullying. I suspect John has seen all of that before in the army and mostly doesn't let barbs about himself get to him. He mostly seems to punch people who are mean to Sherlock. (awwwwwwww).
And Sherlock - he's not politely passive agressive at all. He's just shred you and reveal all your secrets in front of everyone. He doesn't intimate: he surgically and pitilessly lays you out.
