I've been revisiting Best Man because the last time I read through it I decided that Sherlock was unacceptably OOC. I realized that I'd made him too broad, too clueless and I wanted to make it all a bit more subtle as far as he was concerned.

I thought I was just going to smooth out the rough edges. It turned out I'm writing an entirely new story. New, not different, because some parts of it are still exactly the same. I am still telling the same story but parts of it are new and cannot be blended with the old.

What this has given me is this notion of Sherlock seeing words and using them like physical objects to help him think things through.

*****
Slowly and ever so carefully, Sherlock studied John’s words. He picked them up one by one to see for himself exactly how they fit together. He studied each statement from every possible angle. He held them up to the light and watched it illuminate them in a flash of brilliance before emerging in a glorious spectrum as from a prism. Then he did it all over again so that he could be certain. When he was certain, he nodded. He believed his words were true.

And I just love this idea.

ETA - on a real life note, first amusingly: Today I put on the wrong shoes in the dark which means I am very colorful today in red shoes, lilac socks, brown pants, a blue shirt, and my forest green coat. and then on an exasperated note: Today I spilled an entire mug of tea (Tesco Finest Earl Grey courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] quarryquest) into my keyboard. I have done this enough times over the course of my career so far that I didn't expect it to work properly afterwards, and I was correct. I was, however, able to swap it for one at an empty desk which is the same 'shape' as my now sadly broken one so that I do not have to have an adjustment period (until I do it the next time).
