Solidarity for those not on Holiday

So yesterday, quarryquest and I were bemoaning the fact that no one wanted to talk to us.  Boo!  And I remarked that I was consequently holding off on a post in which I wanted to ask everyone to weigh in on some you can imagine issues.  Then I realized that 221b_hound is posting fic and chloris just got a new puppy!  Also, seren_ccd just got back from holiday and is consequently feeling the withdrawal.  Djarum99 lives somewhere where the weather is actually nice and I envy her with every fiber of my being.

So, here are some completely random and inane things that are swirling around in my head.  Feel free to address one or many, or ignore them all completely to throw in some of your own.  The goal is simply to talk to each other.

Go read chapter 1 of quarryquest’s fic.  It is excellent – but talk to us first, save this for afterwards. :-)

The Mirror Has Two Faces.  I absolutely adored this movie when it came out (I was young, all right?  Don’t judge me).  Jeff Bridges!!  Lauren Bacall!!  Barbara wasn’t bad either, quite funny in fact.  I’d probably be regarded with less scorn if I were re-watching Funny Girl instead, but I loved this movie, dammit, and I would watch it again for the Jeff that is Bridges.

Yesterday I realized that one of the plants which is between my car and the door to work is a bee magnet.  I actually pulled out my camera and started snapping.  They’re quick little buggers!  This means that every morning I will now want to take bee pictures.  This is bad because if I start, I won’t want to stop and will be late for work despite being mere yards from my desk.

I really need a haircut.  After watching some concert footage I realized that if I wanted to go 60’s retro with my hair I either needed to have bangs or just grow all of it out really long.  Bangs/fringe require maintenance; maintenance is bad.  Consequently, I haven’t had a haircut since and desperately need to at least get the ends (which still retain some semblance of memory of layers) chopped off so it’s all even.  I am, for some reason, either wilfully resisting or extremely unlucky in happening to be in the right place at the right time to pay someone $10 to do this for me.

I can’t decide what I want to do tomorrow.  It’s a free day, and unluckily KR is working.  I could go to the museum with him and see some of the exhibits I might otherwise miss; I could try to get some writing done; I could watch television all day; I could go for a walk and explore as if it were a weekend day; I could curl up with a book; I could do pretty much anything I liked, but I don’t know what I want to do.  What I don’t want to do is end up sitting around thinking, “I’m not sure what I want to do.”

Oh, we have fudge in the house and this is a very dangerous thing.

KR bought me flowers and ice cream!  He is wonderful.

I have to designate some brain power to figuring out our trip plans.  We want to do the Bourbon trail in KY this autumn and I need to do a cost analysis to decide if it is cheaper to drive or fly.  Probably drive, despite the cost of gas.  But we have nascent plans to possibly go to Uganda at the end of Feb and I need to decide if that is happening or if he’s just going to Uganda and we’re doing something else.  I want to go to London, dammit.  What I really want to do is go to London after the next season of Sherlock airs so that I can coordinate with quarryquest and go location hunting!  Unfortunately, this would require a time machine as regards the vacation days I currently have available since – you know – they haven’t even started shooting it.  I want to go back to Japan and I want to go to Australia and play Scrabble with 221b_hound.  I want to go pretty much anywhere which is pretty or exciting – not in a bungee jump sort of way exciting.

Oh, to throw in some fic - Annoying Cousin Simon has just shot himself in the foot with an antique hunting rifle.  What the bloody hell does Competent!Doctor!John do?  All I can come up with is bind the wound.  Surely there is more to it than this?  Wouldn’t it be buckshot?  There is no bullet to pull out, might he go after the small buckshot bits with tweezers?  I was more sort of imagining he bundles him off to A&E since he’s an annoying twat – if it were Sherlock he might be more inclined to actually treat rather than triage the patient.  Also – and this is entirely my own problem – I’m not sure I can make binding a wound interesting to read.  As it currently stands I’ve taken the coward’s way out.  John ‘swings into action’ and then I cut away.  Might attempt some scary typing to see what comes of it.

There.  If no one comes out to play, I’ve lost nothing at all.

I think an actual bullet wound would be pretty horrific and smash up bone as well as muscle. Buckshot on the other hand... you'd need to check facts on this, but if it's a glancing kind of shot (say, most of the shot missed but he caught the edge of the spray) then there'd be lots of little bits to tweeze out to begin with. He'd probably need x-rays later to make sure they got it all, but in the meantime, I think John might quite enjoy: *tweeze* OUCH *tweeze* OUCH *tweeze* OUCH FUCKING OUCH. "NEver mind, I think there are only twenty or so to go." ANd then plunge it all in antiseptic which will STING LIKE BUGGERY. Nothing there to conflict with the Hippocratic Oath. Or maybe a little. But, even making the patient as comfortable as possible, there will be ouchies, and John is only human. Maybe he can tweeze while they wait for the ambulance.

Having said all that, I'm sure there'll be a lot of blood and pain and significant discomfort for Simon. He'll want to be sure his tendons and muscles aren't severely injured, and than no bones have been chipped or smashed.

As for tomorrow: go to the museum! Take a book as well. ANd a notepad! And possibly fudge! See an exhibition, sit in the cafe and read, or find a lawn to lie on and eat fudge while you make story notes. Damnation, I want to spend the day with you doing that stuff.

Oh. I like that. Must mull over the logistics.

Well, there's my day sorted. :-)

I'm finally making some progress with my Silver Blaze interpretation. I had to adapt differently than I'd imagined because I have Sherlock and friends discovering the body. Well, this means I have to separate out the Holmes line of investigation and the police's line of investigation because Sherlock isn't working under the assumptions that Holmes is, based on all the malarkey that he and Watson discuss which has already been in the papers. My plan is to put all the same elements in, but they'll be differently sequenced. We'll get the Holmes side of things first hand and the police side of things from newspaper reports.

The best part of using SB is that Holmes's whole point of view is blatantly - I'm not affiliated with the police and therefore I can do as I damn well please - that allows me to both separate the story lines and have some real fun with Sherlock interfering with the tracking of the horse. And the fact that the Colonel gets all peeved with him is awesome because John gets to punch him!

So hopefully now that I've worked this out I can get some actual words onto the screen and keep clawing my way to the end of this section. I can see the finish line in the distance - really I can!

I remain VERY EXCITED about reading this fic in full in due course. :) The Colonel is Silver Blaze was one of the few canon Colonels who wasn't a villain, but he was an ass, so John punching him sounds like nothing but poetry to me.

What did you end up doing for your 4th July?

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-05 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I (unwisely) decided not to hitch an early ride to the museum. I rose relatively early and LJ'd for a bit, trying to work up the motivation to get moving on a day which was at 90 by 8:30. I then made it to the museum under my own power and learned it is even hotter in the heart of the city than it is in my little corner which contains trees.

I saw a Genghis Khan exhibit, though, and there was a video which totally did a "his name was [unclear yelping cry] GENGHIS KKHHAAAAAANNNNNN" so it was totally worth it.

Then we gave in and put the AC unit in the bedroom. It is very, very HOT here.

[identity profile] 221b-hound.livejournal.com 2012-07-06 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having a Star Trek moment just thinking about Genghis KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!! I think I"m faintly jealous of your horribly hot day, but only because it's winter here and a bit chilly. But then I think, well, I don't live in *Chicago* where it *snows* so I should stop bitching about Melbourne's relatively kind tempteratures.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-06 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the video didn't actually give us KHAN!! in all its glory, but we supplied it quite readily. And, yes, while we only tend to get one or two serious snow events per season, we are firmly in the market to move to a more temperate climate. It's completely inconvenient that we both happened to be born here and consequently got jobs here and now are a little stuck here.

[identity profile] 221b-hound.livejournal.com 2012-07-06 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
So what will the weather be like if I actually get into your neck of the woods around September or October next year?

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-06 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
October is usually lovely. This is my birthday month and generally we are delighted when the 10th is blessed by weather which never interferes with whatever it is we're doing... cemetery bonus... http://impulsereader.livejournal.com/19160.html

I would say that the beginning of Sept. could be freakishly warm if you happen to get unlucky, but June July Aug are the only real worrisome months.

*happily eyes the Scrabble board*

[identity profile] 221b-hound.livejournal.com 2012-07-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that all sounds very fine. :) Scrabble, a cemetery tour, RL meeting with LJ friends - sounds pretty perfect in fact. :)

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. From what I remember about (a) picking up shotgun cartridges and (b) actually eating pheasant that has been shot is that you get lots and lots of little metal pellets that you have to be very careful not to crack your teeth on. In that case [livejournal.com profile] 221b_hound probably has the correct information. Depends how badly shot the person was, but a trip to the local casualty department is definitely in order.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really confused about the use of buckshot for the purpose of shooting food for exactly this reason. I guess it makes it easier to take the birds down? A spray gives you more of a chance than trying to attempt a kill shot on a moving target? But I was imagining it would be annoying to eat something you've peppered with bits of metal, and you've just confirmed that. I'm going to chalk this one up to - I'm not a camping/hunting/eating game sort of person. It all just confuses me.

I think I'll give Simon a bit of a break and have him just catch a bit of the spray. I really only need him to jump around and be entertaining for a little while, and it's even funnier if John's all - dude, this is barely a scratch.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Birdshot! I had completely forgotten I knew there was such a thing. The pellets are significantly smaller, and probably less likely to cause John to be truly worried about the prat.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But now I'm getting a little alarmed for poor Simon. Perhaps I'm on the wrong websites. Maybe less real-world research on this issue is better.

[identity profile] pargoletta.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on the responses Competent!NurseParctitioner!MyLittleSister has given to similar queries, I'd say that Competent!Doctor!John is likely to bundle Cousin Simon the hell off to A&E where there is a nice X-ray machine just waiting for its date with Cousin Simon's poor abused foot, and then some nice sterile equipment ready to deal with the fallout. Especially if Competent!Doctor!John is on his own vacation at the time.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-03 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, as attractive a visual as a yelping Simon is, I believe that Competent!Doctor! John would do exactly this. Bind wound while dialing 999.

[identity profile] f-m-r-l.livejournal.com 2012-07-05 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Putting pressure on the wound is necessary. If John gets a certain satisfaction out of the process, well, he's human.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-05 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
This. is possibly the most perfect response - ever. As usual.

Thank you.

Still nice here, if you don't mind 30 mile an hour winds and sleeping under a down comforter - sorry :-)

Definitely the A&E - I've seen buckshot damage and it ain't pretty.

The Mirror Has Two Faces was interesting, and yes, Jeff Bridges. Can't beat that with a stick. Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] chloris' post of Carlyle reading Burns? He should always, always read Burns.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
He should, in fact, do nothing but.

I'm currently enjoying Alice, but what the heck is up with the White Queen's sense of style? The eyebrows and the lipstick?

Swooning for Alan Rickman upside down, a cartoon, in a cocoon, dying apparently, but I'm swooning over that voice.

One of my favorite bits - right at the beginning the bit of dialogue with Hamish - he asks if she finds him 'amusing' *sniff* and she's all, 'um, hells no' Two characters have never been at greater cross purposes - fantastic.

[identity profile] chloris.livejournal.com 2012-07-04 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Still getting used to the puppy here! (And she was unwell last night which had us all concerned - she seems better today and has eaten a little something but we are keeping an eye on her.) Yesterday you could have been envious of our weather since it was mid 80s and sunny but today unless you like steady rain it's not so lovely. :)

- Maybe take the pictures on your way home? *g* That way you won't be late.

- I hope you are not sitting about unsure right now! I would do a walk and the museum myself. With Chicklet we don't get to museums too often so I always look forward to a chance to go and you should go since I can't.

- Fudge is extremely dangerous but at least it has a very short half life. I will note it goes excellently with ice cream...but that probably makes it even more dangerous.

[identity profile] impulsereader.livejournal.com 2012-07-04 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I am trying to muster the energy to get up off the couch and commence the breakfasting, walking, museuming etc. But am pretty sure I will be able to do so after I finish typing this....but it's already 91 here...it has risen an entire degree since I got up...this is very discouraging.

Oh, unwell puppy is not good. Have you had her in to the vet at all? Here, the shelter where we got the kitties officially vetted them for us, but we took them in to a local once we had them home.

Oh, see, the morning sun makes the bees luminescent, they are very hard to resist.

Even worse, the ice cream is caramely, it doesn't need any help from the dangerous fudge...
