I think it was the attic which allowed magic to slip into this story. I certainly hadn't intended for it to do so, but the Grandmothers and Claude are very definitely witches and I had absolutely no idea that was the case until I started inserting the stage directions as breaks.
Mycroft is a pretty self-aware bloke. I can't wait to see what this pair gets up to in the next section!
