Word counts a - as a word - and I use them frequently because I am a maverick when it comes to grammar. :-) Except that if you do the proper typewordspace-spacetypenextwordspace it auto-widens the thing and then does not count it as a separate word - until I move it to google and then back to Word, and then it counts it as a word again. face - meet palm.
Oh...AO3 is a good tip, I hadn't thought about that. Still all this copying and pasting and checking and double checking! Good lord! And after all that, it's not as if anyone is actually going to count our words!
I did give counting manually a try but that was about as accurate as the four random online checks I tried. Visual - on the couch, peering at the screen, using a chopstick to tap each word, counting out loud. The cats gave up on me long ago.
