I refuse to use photobucket for one second longer. I haven't investigated the alternatives yet, but this is simply not negotiable.

I swear to all of you that at some point my ROM entry looked right and the entirety of every picture could be seen, but at the moment most of them are being cut off and they're appearing on AO3 at their original size though I very carefully re-sized them on pb.

I am absolutely enraged - bizarrely, for once my instinctive choice is an available mood.

I use photobucket and haven't had any problems (which isn't very helpful, I know) but I've also got some stuff on google and that seems to work fine too. Or picasa might be ok?
Anyhow I hope you find something that works :)

*sighs* I'm sort of technologically incompetent to start with, and I just really don't need help messing things up!

I'm thinking I'll put these particular pictures into picasa for an immediate fix of the problem and go from there.

Thanks for weighing in! :-)

All of the stuff I have been doing with my photos is in Picasa. I works fine, and as you have a Gmail account you're practically fine. Picasa is good for photo editing too - that is what I use that part of it for also.

How do I get a darn html code in Picasa?

On the left of the picture if you click on it in the album there is something that says 'Link to this picture' - it will drop down and give you the direct link (the ones I often send to you in email) and the HTML in different sizes. Just remember to click the 'hide album link' box below it as otherwise you get stuck in a silly frame.

Just a thought - which may be completely wrong - but did you actually open each picture individually before copying the link. If you didn't, you might only have copied the link to the thumbnail, hence the AO3 pictures being cut off?

And now it's back to being fine again. I am seriously going to tear hair from head.

I was thinking the being cut off was because the pictures were reverting back to their original size - I've had trouble in the past after re-sizing pictures to make them smaller, it seems like there's a lag before the change is registered outside the pb site, and I'm starting to think pb just hates when you change the picture size and punishes you forever.

That's interesting, though, I was thinking there was only one html code per picture. If there is more than one (or if it makes a sound like a dolphin) I'm not sure what I've done. I definitely don't click on the picture then copy the code every time.

What you need to do when you change the size or whatever in photobucket is do the 'save as' option instead. That's what I was told when I complained when my things weren't keeping their changes. I'm also still using their old look because I hate the new one. I bitched about that too and so far they're letting the old look stay/ I've had a paid account with them for 8 years, I don't really want to go anywhere else.

Ah, that makes some sort of sense at least. It's annoying in the extreme, though.

I'm just at the point where I'm going to have to start paying them, so I'll need to make a decision.

Thanks for the tip!

Fingers crossed that it's fixed permanently :)
And I just realised I only have the size issue with gifs, so it might be down to how they get uploaded. Or something. Here lies the end of my technical ability!

Right. I once tried to explain my ability with computers as akin to:

1. Something happens.

2. I boggle at the stupidity of computers.

3. I tentatively prod around the edges of what I know how to do in an attempt to identify what something has just happened.

4. I fail to do 3 in any effective manner.

5. While I am trying to work this out, the computer in question has somehow produced marshmallow unicorns which dance upon rainbows, and now proceeds to unleash them into the world.

6. I alert the media.

7. Sadly, by the time the media arrive the unicorns are gone and my computer is once again (miraculously) working properly.

This cycle is why no one believes me anymore when I cry marshmallow unicorns.

*wipes tears of laughter from face*
Marshmallow unicorns?!?! Yeah, that sounds just about right. Thank you for making me giggle from inside my fortress of philosophy books and stacks of notes :)

I like flickr. And it will do the embed code for you in various sizes, making a link that will take people back to the main version if they click on the picture. And you can also sign in with your Google account, even though it's owned by yahoo. But if it has any photo editing, I've never explored it—I have editing software on my desktop already, which is faster than editing things over the connection.

It does have some photo editing. There's a drop down to do simple stuff like rotating, and I think a more extensive one in another page.

Interesting. I think I'll have to do some trial runs before I make a final decision. I'm doing quite a lot of photo-oriented stuff and it would be nice to have something which feels comfortable and possibly takes less time than I'm currently spending being fussy. I've always been vaguely irritated with photobucket and only using it because initially it was easier to use with LJ than any other host.

Thanks for weighing in - first hand recs are very valuable in this case.

If you are using photobucket to edit photos I would definitely switch! I do all my editing in photoshop and only upload finished products so photobucket works for me. (And I have thousands of pictures on it all organized so I'm probably going to stick with it.) I have found that if you edit on the site - or delete and upload a picture with the same filename but with changes - photobucket won't show it (at least to you) for a while. It doesn't mean it's not changed just that the cache hasn't caught up.

Oh, and if you use jpgs, they will periodically go around and compress them. Which is why I post in pngs now! So...anyway good luck in finding a new site since I just gave you two good reasons to switch. :)

Thanks for the advice, what you've said sounds spot on to what I've experienced. I'm auditioning new sites. We'll see how it goes.

At the very beginning I didn't really have any sense of what I would be using the site for, and when I started my journal photobucket seemed the default choice, because when inserting an html image there used to be a more direct link for photobucket images.

It's good timing at least, as I'm about to have to start paying them if I want to keep on, so it's a good time to make a decision and poke around a bit.
