You guys seem a lot more concerned about my physical safety than I am. Thanks for that, I'll have to be sure to keep running things by you.

Darn it. Because as nice as the new ones are (and they are nice, djarum99, thank you ever so, I may very well order from there), and there are a couple which fall into my price range, I like the idea of an antique. And the other one I really like (though the pictures were taken outside and there's quite a lot of sun glare which I wonder about) is some wacky 3/4 mattress size which, when googled, basically tells me the universe laughs.

And, of course, the local option is a gorgeous wooden frame with a matching vanity table - which would normally send me into fits of dancing and happiness and typing without commas like this - but the new place is tiny, (well, not nearly as tiny as some of the places I saw *shudders*) honestly tiny, (because when you travel with a minimum of 3 bookcases tiny is relative) and I already have all this wood which I'm now trying to balance out instead of replacing straight away to make the place not feel crowded with stuff (except it cannot help but be crowded with books).

I'm sure I've already mentioned that I hate moving. Oh, and as a lovely bonus I'm covered in bruises from the eight trips down the three flights of stairs yesterday with various boxes and bags filled with stuff. How on earth do we end up with so much stuff we don't actually want? I am banned from ever again having such a thing as 'closet space' because I simply fill it with things I don't want to think about.

Sorry, that turned ranty at the end but I'm stubbornly hitting post without editing myself on the grounds that I've made a valid point about materialism. Also I need to go finish packing and I don't have time to make it all sound more sensible.

This does not sound like a happy move :-( I recommend a good single malt for bruises and book angst.

The antique frames I've seen run from $400 to $1500, but you can find them on eBay...

Your recommendation is currently (and thankfully) in hand.

Hopefully things will now start to normalize a bit and rational decisions can once again be reached without the ranting first. :-)

Honestly, at this point, once you've found iron bed frames that are the right size and in your price range? Just order them. They'll last you for years and years and years, and you can think of them as "antiques in the making." If you keep them long enough, they might even actually be antiques by the time you're an old lady!

Crowded with books is the best kind of crowded.

I'm thinking you might need a "get-out-of-the-house-if-only-for-a-cup-of-tea" break early next week . . .

The problem with the bed is there are so many options and I'm trying to figure out which is the least hassle (bed frame plus mattress etc.) and money with shipping vs. trying to physically transport on my own, as well as end up with something I actually like right now with possible use for later. For example, I could do a twin daybed with those antique pieces which, if I end up in a bigger place later could go in a guest room - but am I likely to end up in chicago with a multi-bedroom apartment again any time soon? Unlikely, but difficult to predict. Do I want to sleep on a twin right now? Not really, but I really covet those frames.

Thus - I dither.

I hear you. I moved here two years ago, and the thought of having to haul my stuff with me again is not a happy one- and I own no furniture!

Thanks. I went into this thinking, 'easy peasy, the books will be the only real headache'. Turns out - not so much.

But the movers were brilliant (though late) and aside from not getting the cable to work so far, I'm settled in fairly well.

Thanks for the commiseration. :-)

Reading this I'm thinking you decided not to go with the small frame/large mattress idea. Good! I don't like it either. :D

Chicklet has a 3/4 mattress which we bought for an old bed. But we have a HUGE superstore nearby that sells them in various softnesses. (Chicklet picked the nicest and cushiest one - she is my daughter.) When you run into trouble is with a bed that needs a 3/4 mattress in extra long size. Those are completely impossible to find! It was easier to replace the side of the bed than to find one of those. Especially one which is actually comfortable.

Everyone seemed so firmly united in the opinion I was going to end up on the floor that I was simultaneously amused and convinced. I also haven't yet heard back about the shipping cost so it's probably not meant to be.

Interesting. I'll have to see if there are any larger mattressy sorts of stores around.
