Most of what I've read has been slash. If you decide to read ACD slash, keep in mind that male homosexual acts were illegal in those days; "two years hard labor" was the punishment, but two years of hard labor could kill a man if he didn't die in prison from other things. And the cultural, societal, and religious condemnation can definitely have an affect on self-perception. But not all of the authors incorporate any of that as a strong factor in their fics.

To start with:

Katie Forsythe is popular favorite <http://katieforsythe.livejournal.com/>

tweedisgood writes entertaining, in character, and meticulously researched ACD stories <http://archiveofourown.org/users/tweedisgood/pseuds/tweedisgood/works?fandom_id=117953>

Unraveled, by circa1220bce, handles the "woke up with amnesia and assumed a relationship" trope extremely well <http://circa1220bce.livejournal.com/1523.html>

Matches, by janeturenne, is a marvelous bit of slashy hotness for those into that sort of thing <http://janeturenne.livejournal.com/44605.html>

I find the crack fic The Ague tremendously entertaining <http://holmes-watson.dreamwidth.org/1099.html>

Here's a lovely picture by pennies_4_eyes <http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/20289.html>
