Seeking rather than offering. Does anyone have any favorites?

Most of what I've read has been slash. If you decide to read ACD slash, keep in mind that male homosexual acts were illegal in those days; "two years hard labor" was the punishment, but two years of hard labor could kill a man if he didn't die in prison from other things. And the cultural, societal, and religious condemnation can definitely have an affect on self-perception. But not all of the authors incorporate any of that as a strong factor in their fics.

To start with:

Katie Forsythe is popular favorite <http://katieforsythe.livejournal.com/>

tweedisgood writes entertaining, in character, and meticulously researched ACD stories <http://archiveofourown.org/users/tweedisgood/pseuds/tweedisgood/works?fandom_id=117953>

Unraveled, by circa1220bce, handles the "woke up with amnesia and assumed a relationship" trope extremely well <http://circa1220bce.livejournal.com/1523.html>

Matches, by janeturenne, is a marvelous bit of slashy hotness for those into that sort of thing <http://janeturenne.livejournal.com/44605.html>

I find the crack fic The Ague tremendously entertaining <http://holmes-watson.dreamwidth.org/1099.html>

Here's a lovely picture by pennies_4_eyes <http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/20289.html>

Thank you kindly. I'm actually quite fond of a slashy bent for Victorian Holmes/Watson.

I have a fic to write and I'm trying to decide where to start so I'm just trying to get lots and lots of thoughts swirling around to see what shakes out. One of the things that make me think, 'Hm, I wonder..' was the idea of Holmes and Watson retiring together to Sussex. Would they actually have been able to do this considering the atmosphere at the time? Two bachelors sharing rooms on a long-term basis in London is one thing, but a move to the country together seems quite another.

Sadly, in canon they don't retire to Sussex together. Though a lot of fans will point out that Watson is not always the most reliable narrator....
