Most of what I've read has been slash. If you decide to read ACD slash, keep in mind that male homosexual acts were illegal in those days; "two years hard labor" was the punishment, but two years of hard labor could kill a man if he didn't die in prison from other things. And the cultural, societal, and religious condemnation can definitely have an affect on self-perception. But not all of the authors incorporate any of that as a strong factor in their fics.

I have a fic to write and I'm trying to decide where to start so I'm just trying to get lots and lots of thoughts swirling around to see what shakes out. One of the things that make me think, 'Hm, I wonder..' was the idea of Holmes and Watson retiring together to Sussex. Would they actually have been able to do this considering the atmosphere at the time? Two bachelors sharing rooms on a long-term basis in London is one thing, but a move to the country together seems quite another.
