Otherwise (trying very hard to remember), I'm a fan both of methylviolet10b's and garonne's ACD writing. They both write with slashy undertones (or sometimes explicitly), though, so I don't know what's your take on that. But I found it very hard to find gen ACD fics - even harder than finding gen fics in the BBC version! methylviolet10b is a very prolific writer and she writes lots and lots of drabbles, too, so I can't really recommend any of her fics specifically. Just try any of them. :-) From garonne, I'll recommend one of her few gen fics: On Ilkley Moor, a spooky casefic that manages to be supernatural and scientific at the same time.
If I think some more, maybe I can come up with more recs. :-)
(Also *cough* allow me one self-rec: Go and Catch a Falling Star was written for holmestice, too, and is my attempt at a magical realism style casefic (well, kind of). *cough* Self-rec over.)
Most of what I've read has been slash. If you decide to read ACD slash, keep in mind that male homosexual acts were illegal in those days; "two years hard labor" was the punishment, but two years of hard labor could kill a man if he didn't die in prison from other things. And the cultural, societal, and religious condemnation can definitely have an affect on self-perception. But not all of the authors incorporate any of that as a strong factor in their fics.
These are not recently-written stories, but they have lingered in my memory :) Hope you enjoy some of them. They're all gen.
First, I second the above recommendation of Westron Wynde's stories (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1507793/Westron-Wynde), they are all great fun.
Aragonite is a wonderful ACD writer, and very prolific. You might try An Ordinary Meeting (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4188511/1/An-Ordinary-Meeting) to start with, and if you like it she has many longer and more elaborate novellas to explore. The summary is: Lestrade meets the man mad enough to room with Sherlock Holmes.
This one is a lovely piece of art that tells the story of Holmes's hiatus in a sequence of beautifully rendered telegrams between him and Mycroft. Sub Rosa, A Correspondence by Wire (http://prof-pangaea.livejournal.com/115264.html) by prof-pangaea.
Pompey writes wonderfully detailed historical fiction. You might enjoy On Afghanistan's Plains (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4029558/1/On-Afghanistan-s-Plains), a prequel to the Holmes stories that follows Watson through his army experiences in Afghanistan and beyond.
KCS is another incredibly prolific ACD author. You might try out her Agreement and Disputation (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5042004/1/Agreement-and-Disputation), one of her lighter stories, to see if you enjoy her style. "Perhaps the most delightful friendships are those in which there is much agreement, much disputation, and yet more personal liking." -George Eliot. A budding friendship, seen through the private diary of Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
