Thanks. These go directly to the top of the list. Reccing holmestice in general is a good idea. That hadn't occurred to me, though it really should have!

Date: 2013-02-02 10:03 pm (UTC)To start with:
Katie Forsythe is popular favorite <http://katieforsythe.livejournal.com/>
tweedisgood writes entertaining, in character, and meticulously researched ACD stories <http://archiveofourown.org/users/tweedisgood/pseuds/tweedisgood/works?fandom_id=117953>
Unraveled, by circa1220bce, handles the "woke up with amnesia and assumed a relationship" trope extremely well <http://circa1220bce.livejournal.com/1523.html>
Matches, by janeturenne, is a marvelous bit of slashy hotness for those into that sort of thing <http://janeturenne.livejournal.com/44605.html>
I find the crack fic The Ague tremendously entertaining <http://holmes-watson.dreamwidth.org/1099.html>
Here's a lovely picture by pennies_4_eyes <http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/20289.html>

Date: 2013-02-03 05:25 am (UTC)First, I second the above recommendation of Westron Wynde's stories (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1507793/Westron-Wynde), they are all great fun.
Aragonite is a wonderful ACD writer, and very prolific. You might try An Ordinary Meeting (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4188511/1/An-Ordinary-Meeting) to start with, and if you like it she has many longer and more elaborate novellas to explore. The summary is: Lestrade meets the man mad enough to room with Sherlock Holmes.
This one is a lovely piece of art that tells the story of Holmes's hiatus in a sequence of beautifully rendered telegrams between him and Mycroft. Sub Rosa, A Correspondence by Wire (http://prof-pangaea.livejournal.com/115264.html) by prof-pangaea.
Pompey writes wonderfully detailed historical fiction. You might enjoy On Afghanistan's Plains (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4029558/1/On-Afghanistan-s-Plains), a prequel to the Holmes stories that follows Watson through his army experiences in Afghanistan and beyond.
KCS is another incredibly prolific ACD author. You might try out her Agreement and Disputation (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5042004/1/Agreement-and-Disputation), one of her lighter stories, to see if you enjoy her style. "Perhaps the most delightful friendships are those in which there is much agreement, much disputation, and yet more personal liking." -George Eliot. A budding friendship, seen through the private diary of Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
Hope some of those may fit your tastes! Enjoy!

Date: 2013-02-03 05:50 pm (UTC)I have a fic to write and I'm trying to decide where to start so I'm just trying to get lots and lots of thoughts swirling around to see what shakes out. One of the things that make me think, 'Hm, I wonder..' was the idea of Holmes and Watson retiring together to Sussex. Would they actually have been able to do this considering the atmosphere at the time? Two bachelors sharing rooms on a long-term basis in London is one thing, but a move to the country together seems quite another.
