Grandmere wants to hear about Sherlock and John's adventures. Which ACD adaptation should they relate to her?

Can I actually get away with having John refer - in his head, not out loud - to her as Not Anthea?

Dear Suffolk, are you sure you're still there? The USPS lady I spoke with yesterday, in all her seventeen years working there, hadn't heard of you. I assured her I had.

Everyone cross your fingers and hope that lemons 21, 22, 23, 31 and 32 arrive in time to be taken to London! On a related note, really Fedex? You seriously want $120 to send my $5 worth of plastic lemons across the pond? You must think I'm completely insane. I'm not.

I am assured that there are lemons officially in play and there may soon be pictures! http://traveling-lemon.livejournal.com/1162.html

I was forced to overpay for lemons yesterday because the only ones I had ready to go were sent off by post, and I didn't want to delay 221b_hound's tea shipment, but I also wasn't going to skip adding a little bit of artificial citrus to the package. But my Pier One was out of the bags! They had plenty of limes, but I think the green is a little dark for being written on in black. I might have to get some white pens. The hardest part of all this lemon business is the writing on them and keeping as much of the cat hair as possible out of the varnish.

Mycroft is delicious. He's such a complicated blend I initially tried to drink him usweetened, but he is much better with a pinch of sugar.

I love that this is the way my local bakery rolls, the couples on the wedding cakes are not only same-sex but also interracial.

I assure you Suffolk does exist, and has since the 5th century! Mind you having problems with the post is not new. When I first moved in I had no letter box in the door (as one has here) - the landlord had to screw me a European style mail box onto the wall outside. The other problem is as I was literally the first person into this flat I am not on any of the automatic addressing systems. 160 B and C are here but D is definitely not available.

There must be a universal difficulty. Our building technically has two street #s, one for the front three apartments and one for the back. We initially moved in on the first floor in back and eventually moved upstairs to the front. Well, upon initial set up and then transfer between apts, I was told multiple times by utilities that one or both of my apartments didn't exist.

My favorite part was when they were telling me that the ground floor rear wasn't there. What did they think was holding up the other two apartments above it which they did acknowledge as existing?

Huh. Apparently I've found my niche. I'm supposed to do my best to keep the occupants of Suffolk entertained.

Off Topic.

Given that you seem to be a history lover (as am I!) have you discovered CBBCs "Horrible Histories"? Or at any rate their musical offerings. A number are on YouTube. :D (And if your bandwidth etc will let you watch the HH Prom, I recommend that too.)

I know it's written for kids and I know that even half the presenters are younger than I am - but good-looking guys (IMO, anyway) singing about historic events/cultures/societies/people in parodies of modern music syles/numbers? What's not to love?

(I particularly recommend "Literally", the "Battle of Britain Pilots" and "My Name is Charles II".)

I had no idea there were shows. When we were on vacation in the UK I bought some of the books to bring home as presents for the nieces and nephews. I will definitely check this out - most likely Tuesday or Thurs night. Making note to report back.

I have no idea how to embed.

Spartan School Musical (Parody of High School Musical, natch) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjozP5DrtDU&feature=related

Battle of Britain Pilots - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N07darJyUrY&feature=relmfu

Charles II - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2kyNbZc7oc&feature=relmfu

I basically discovered this when the HH Prom was on TV recently. But yes, worth exploring IMO. Have fun!

Did you not bother or not have time or not enjoy?

Just in case it's a question of time or not having reported back, have some more links. :D

The Borgia Family "I'll kill you if you cross me... I might kill you anyway." :D - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDDCQc3m_1U&feature=related

The Greek Philosophers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCsph5Pykvk&feature=related

Literally - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qSkaAwKMD4

And Dick Turpin (not sure if Adam Ant (which is what this is parodying) made it to the US, though) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KbXyALq7uA&list=UURiU9GoH6WDXbXMy0ixj2DA&index=2&feature=plcp

And just to really sell you, Mark Gatiss and the League of Gentlemen guest starred as American Movie Producers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cKEulE4-v8&feature=related

Just watched the Mark Gatiss one and hopped back to reply right away - because this is what happens - I click a link and watch one of the vids - then I get distracted by all the other great vids youtube wants me to watch - then I get distracted and google the vids so that I can learn they were born of the books (which makes me very happy) and I neglect to report back. :-(

Reporting back that everything I've watched so far is great! I am enjoying immensely!

Heh.

It's the comments that get me. Apparently I am a fourteen year old girl, b/c like the dozens of them who comment, I must confess to a "thing" for Mat. (The tall skinny one who played Charles II, Dick Turpin etc). ;) Oh well, he is 31.

Tho' thanks to "Dick Turpin" I now have a fusion of "Stand & Deliver" and "Prince Charming" by Adam and the Ants going through my head. And crossed with Benedict/Sherlock - "Don't you ever, don't you ever, stop being dandy, telling me you're handsome..."

ETA "Prince Charming! Prince Charming! Ridicule is nothing to be scared of!"

(In Drama Soc at uni, whenever a line said something like "I am adamant!", we'd parse it "I am Adam Ant" and do the Adam Ant arm-cross thing. :D)

I enjoyed the HH books - they do Horrible Science (with titles like "Blood, Bones & Body Bits" or "Putrid Poisons") and Horrible Geographies too - especially when I was a teacher. FUN. (Pretty sure Sherlock would own "Villainous Victorians" just for lols. Or John would buy it him to complete his collection of books on Jack the Ripper.)

But the TV show, especially the musical numbers, is something else again. And the PARODIES - they send up Masterchef and The Apprentice as well as these parody musical numbers and I just *enjoy* it. :D

Pilgrim Fathers. :D

ETA - "William Shakespeare" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Cy4-rfd24 b/c I know you love Shakespeare. Oh, and given our Pirates convo I need to find you the Blackbeard one too... Unless you've already seen it?

Just watched Blackbeard and the Shakespeare! Hands down the Shakespeare is my favorite so far. I'm a sucker for Sinatra, so that puts it over the top for me. :-)

Just rewatched Blackbeard. Doesn't Jim (Blackbeard) *conducting* with a loaded pistol make you think of someone? (ie Sherlock at the end of Great Game waving the gun around and *scratching his head* with it. Genius population's biggest moron.)

And yes, the Shakespeare one is very fine. It reminds me of the girl in my GCSE English class who said, "Why does Shakespeare use so many cliches? I thought he was supposed to be our best writer ever or something."

Oh, how I love HH. BTW Shakespeare is Mat again. ;)
