I urge everyone to hop over to my spy request post, even if you have no spies to offer up, and get a preview of what is in store. http://impulsereader.livejournal.com/40144.html?view=329936#t329936 And now, a picture post. Chicago over Labor Day weekend.

I have on offer wrought iron, a funny sign, farmers' market, more wrought iron, Egypt in Chicago, and a new book on Shakespeare. But first, above the cut because it is just that awesome - I give you, years before he had an inferno: Dante's Caterpillar.

I ran across this in the window of what must be a day care or school of some sort and it set me to giggling madly. Potential parents, please learn to anticipate what your child's name will put others in mind of when made possessive and put in front of silly words.

This is a gate to a small cemetery near home.

A random but lovely detail I ran across on my walk.

Saturday's funny sign. I suppose I'm just not the right audience for this one.

Photobucket

And I've reached the farmers' market.

Photobucket

I really love when they name the produce.

Shout out to my Suffolk contingent!

I don't particularly enjoy eating mushrooms, but they are pretty!

Photobucket

I'm also a sucker for rainbow anything.

Come for the sub, stay for the psychic reading.

Photobucket

She's open!

Photobucket

Not as far away from that Subway/Psychic combo as you may expect, I happened upon one of our ritzier neighborhoods and learned a valuable lesson. This is, unsurprisingly, where all of coolest wrought iron hangs after class.

All of the above, incidentally, were all on the same house. Another lovely gate in the vicinity.

Photobucket

Welcome to Lincoln Park - the actual park rather than the neighborhood.

Photobucket

Then this little guy with the cute green legs showed up.

Photobucket

Just in time to help me illustrate one of the monument's features.

Photobucket

And of course I was thinking, 'Hm, I wonder what sort of bird the little guy is. I'll have to look him up.' But the Park District was way ahead of me.

Photobucket

But since he was clearly posing rather than nesting I trust I didn't actually disturb him in any way.

All right, the Egyptian building was incredibly difficult to get photos of because there were cars parked bumper to bumper in front of it, and because it's still (amazingly) home to a removals company one of them was a large moving truck. This meant the view from across the street was useless. I did what I could.

And, the next day I ran across this and it just made my weekend!

It was a lovely weekend in Chicago.

"CHEAP & TACKY"? Let's hope 'tacky' isn't a description of the texture of the wall if you brush against it. But off street parking is lovely. Might be worth it.

Beautiful produce. Especially the rhubarb. Strawberry rhubarb pie is a wonderful thing.

The black-crowned night heron is adorable.

Oh, Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare! I am filled with envy. For personal reasons that I won't go into here, that book makes me all kinds of bittersweetly happy.

We once moved into a place where the walls were covered in what appeared to be loose fur glued on with dog drool. Needless to say, we washed everything including the walls before we moved in. And it only had off-street parking for an extra $250 a month.

That sign is huge. It's almost bill-board size. I can only imagine there is an audience (most of whom I imagine do not consider the alternate implications of tacky). The parking could be the issue, certainly.

The heron was adorable, indeed, and he was not alone. Afterward I realized he was simply the 'ham' of the group.

I am loving the book. I'm indulging by reading the MacBeth section first, delaying the Much Ado satisfaction until I've gotten some writing done. It dominated my Sunday. It was in the window, you see, and the shop (which I am familiar with) wasn't open yet. I immediately changed all plans, proceeded to somewhere I could get some stuff done until the shop opened, and then returned. I had steeled myself to pay quite a bit more for it and was shocked when it was priced at only $10.

Asimov's Guide To Shakespeare! Did you buy it? I hope you bought it. It's an utterly fantastic book. I just adore my copy.

The sad thing is, I know people for whom "Cheap and Tacky, Two Bedrooms" would hold a great deal of appeal . . . Not to worry, I am not quiiiiiiiiite one of them. Although the "cheap" part does appeal.

You may just have inspired me to go downtown on Thursday and hit the Daley Plaza Farmer's Market. If I can get my job application in on time.

Oh yes. The entire day was restructured around buying this book. The shop wasn't open when I first passed by and saw it in the window. I turned around, went somewhere I knew I could 'get stuff done' while I waited for the shop to open, then went back. This also means the rest of my walk was weighed down by this unbelievably heavy book, but it was totally worth it. I'm loving it! It will also prove really helpful for Sherlock and John's prep sessions.

Our markets are wonderful for both buying and just wandering. I always encourage visits.

You got some great pictures of wrought iron in this set! Also, all the pretty fruits and vegetables. Yum. I do love a farmer's market. The bird is adorable and it's rather perfect there was a sign right there. :) I sometimes wish the birds at our feeder would come with a sign.

Thanks! Going into the upscale neighborhoods seems to help. They've got some rocking wrought iron. :-)

It was pretty surreal - cute bird - cute bird poses by rock carved into wing - cute bird is identified - I headed out of the park at that point whistling the Twilight Zone theme...
