The skepticism left John’s eyes. “Hm. Well that’s good, I wouldn’t want to deny Claude his opportunity to paint my portrait. He needs a second sitting.”

Sherlock giggled. “Did he try to get you to pose in the nude?”

“Disturbingly, yes.”

“Oh, John, tell me you didn’t refuse! It’s just what we need over the mantle!”

“We compromised on shirtless.”

I'd write a more lucid comment but I'm all distracted by the mental image of shirtless John...

Now I'm trying to decide how he's posed - because you know that portrait comes in the post during one of our monthly glimpses into preparations at 221b.

Is it meant to be a naturalistic style of art, or something more surreal. And does John want to conceal the scar or not?

I actually have a mental image of John standing, facing the viewer very directly. That look John gets, just calmly meeting the world eye to eye. He's not going out of his way to look for trouble, but you know from that look that he is not going to put up with anyone's shit either. Calmness and readiness in one. It's frank, honest a little defiant. You know. John.

I think his arms are by his sides, rather than folded. Perhaps in one hand a stethoscope? Something less obvious as a medical symbol, maybe? A cadaceus? Loosely, though, like a tool waiting to be used. The other hand would be open, either facing the viewer, or maybe curled slightly, at ease, as it were, a natural stance.

Wearing fatigues, do you think,or jeans? Not tailored pants, I'd think, too formal.

what do you think? The kind of image you were thinking of? And will JOhn like it? I'm trying to think of the artistic point of the shirtlessness, but if it's combined with army fatigues, a cadaceus and that look on his face, it could stand for honesty, vulnerability and strength all at once.

Or am I overthinking things?

You're, actually, not over thinking. It's quite the puzzle.

In my head, it was a joke. Of course Uncle Claude requested that John pose nude, and John and Sherlock would giggle over this, but of course John would flat out refuse.

But then he didn't.

Hm.

Okay, that's both giggle-worthy and it sort of makes sense, and I can work with that - except that I'd already planned on the portrait showing up later.

So, now when I start mulling over that scene I need to incorporate the fact that John is minus his shirt, and I'm having a hard time doing that.

I was thinking jeans or fatigues, somehow that seems natural, and I like the idea of incorporating something medical. There seems to be desert in the background in my head, but I think I might evolve past that, it might be a little too Afghanistan and obvious for Claude.

I think I'm going to have to insert Claude into some scene where John is taking action, and give him an 'ah ha' moment so that he gets the "John" expression that you're talking about right. I'm not sure he effects that unless he's actually in 'protect Sherlock' mode or similar.

Vernet did a lot of seascapes, but perhaps I should google his work for inspiration. Oh, field trip! I wonder if the art institute has a lot of his work...could drop off a lemon while I'm at it...

OH, the research required when we start out thinking we're just going to have a bit of fun.

Now I wonder if John isn't *completely* shirtless, but in a regular buttoned shirt with the buttons all undone. That would reveal that stripe of vulnerability, as it were, and certainly in keeping with how an army man might dress on a bloody hot day if he wasn't on duty. Perhaps some idiot wings *themselves* in the hunt, or slips with a knife while gutting birds (do people do that with birds or just with fish??) and John's got to go all BAMF!FieldSurgeon: not a life threatening injury, but you get that whole guns-and-medicine thing, I'm sure you can work in a moment of deshabille as required (using his shirt to staunch blood?)

I love overthinking these things with yuo. And yes - FIELD TRIP! AND THE TRAVELLING LEMON! SIMULTANEOUSLY!!!!

Now I'm thinking, is there a lake or something on the property? A water background could work, but I'm also trying to remember the ways in which water is symbolic in art. Change, death, renewal, stuff like that? ALl of which suit John well.

Research, right?

I'm learning about music, cricket, art, shooting parties, the wildlife in various parts of England - this is insane!

Actually, I do have annoying cousin Simon shooting himself in the foot along with other various opportunities for John to Doctor people. It is a very good thought to just insert Claude there somehow.

I very much like the visual of the gaping shirt! That works a lot better in my head for some reason - it's more John? He's more subtle like that - where Sherlock would strip if the conditions were right, he'd be all - you don't actually need me shirtless, here, look at this. Unbuttoning and winking and - that smile. Oh dear.

There's a lovely bit of fanart somewhere of John in Afghanistan, unbuttoned shirt, all BAMF, smiling. Not the painting we're thinking of, but rather nice. :)

Is COusin Simon one of the snobby ones who's been giving John a hard time about not having been to the right schools. when clearly the Right School for those circumstances is Medical School. Take that, Simon, you twat.

Yes, Simon is the embodiment of the 'I would have missed you at Eton', knowing full well John didn't attend, crowd. He gets a bit irritated when John proves a better shot than he....

Question: Do you have (or, indeed, are you yourself) an artist?

I'm not brilliant, but I do enjoy pootling in watercolours, graphite and coloured pencil... and the idea of shirtless John is rather inspirational.
